Inferencing
When reading a story sometimes a reader has to use prior knowledge and (+) what the text says to make (=) an inference. An inference is something a reader has to come up with because it is not clearly stated in the text.
We make inferences everyday in our lives. For example: you may infer a friend is sad because they are frowning with their head held low, and you may know that one of your other friends said something that might hurt their feelings during lunch.
We also make inferences when looking at pictures and watching movies. These are all the things that unspoken, yet through the actions of the characters and other clues, you can make an inference.
